OK, so is anyone else hooked on this game? Oh my lord. I went to a friend's house for drinks after a birthday dinner and they pulled it out. Before I knew it, I had to get the game and a PS3 to play it on!!!

I thought I'd be singing mostly as I trained up to be a singer, but the drums are so fun. Being the geek that I am, I'm already practicing paradiddles and rolls. I'm also finding rock band parties are a great way to get the geeks in one room.

I've been buying Norton Anti Virus for several years now, and imagine my surprise to learn that I could have Road Runner anti-virus for free! It's supposed to be just as good. Does anyone out there use Road Runner anti-virus or know anything about it?

I would like to use a web-site anonymously. But I don't want them to know I am using an anonymous proxy server. The main thing is that I want to hide my geographic location. Optimally, I'd love to make it appear as if I am from South Korea.

Any ideas?

Mummy Could Be Powerful Female Pharoah

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=11464869

Archaeologists using DNA testing said they have identified a mummy discovered more than a century ago as Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt's most powerful female pharoah.

The discovery has not been independently reviewed by other experts.

The mummy was discovered in 1903 in the Valley of the Kings, but it was left in place until two months ago. Archaeologists then took the mummy to the Cairo Museum for testing, said Egypt's antiquities chief Zahi Hawass.

Hawass has been searching for the queen for about a year, setting up a DNA lab in the basement of the Cairo Museum. The study was funded by The Discovery Channel, which is set to air an exclusive documentary on the find in July.

Hawass said the key clue was a molar. It was found in a jar bearing the queen's insignia and containing some of her embalmed organs. The tooth fit a gap in the mummy's jaw. Hawass' team is still conducting DNA testing that they hope could help confirm the find.

"We are 100 percent certain" that the mummy is that of Hatshepsut, Hawass told The Associated Press.

Hatshepsut ruled Egypt in the 15th century B.C. and was known for dressing like a man and wearing a false beard. When her reign ended, all traces of her disappeared. Her 22-year rule ended in 1453 B.C. and was the longest among ancient Egyptian queens.

The mummy identified as Hatshepsut died in her 50s, Hawass said. He said she was obese and probably had diabetes and liver cancer. When the mummy was discovered, the left hand was positioned against her chest, which is a traditional sign of royalty in ancient Egypt.

But other Egyptologists are not as certain that the mummy is Hatshepsut.

Molecular biologist Scott Woodward, director of the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation in Salt Lake City, was cautious about the announcement.

"It's a very difficult process to obtain DNA from a mummy," Woodward said. "To make a claim as to a relationship, you need other individuals from which you have obtained DNA, to make a comparison between the DNA sequences."

Such DNA material would typically come from parents or grandparents. With female mummies, the most common type of DNA to look for is the mitochondrial DNA that reveals maternal lineage, Woodward said.

Molecular geneticist Yehia Zakaria Gad, who is part of Hawass' team, said DNA samples were taken from the mummy's pelvis and femur, so that more genetic tests can be run that compare the mummy to the queen's grandmother, Amos Nefreteri, who was previously identified. Gad said preliminary results are "very encouraging."

Molecular biologist Paul Evans of the Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, said the discovery would be remarkable if the mummy is indeed Hatshepsut.

"Hatshepsut is an individual who has a unique place in Egypt's history. To have her identified is on the same magnitude as King Tut's discovery," Evans said.

Hatshepsut is believed to have stolen the throne from her young stepson, Thutmose III.

Hatshepsut's funerary temple is located in ancient Thebes on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor, a multi-collonaded sandstone temple built to serve as tribute to her power.

But after her death, her name was obliterated from the records in what is believed to have been her stepson's revenge.

She was one of the most prolific builder pharaohs of ancient Egypt, commissioning hundreds of projects throughout both Upper and Lower Egypt. Almost every major museum in the world today has a collection of Hatshepsut statuary.

Yesterday I made a cool new web gallery.
It all started when Robert Aminzade contacted me about my old friend Vito Paulekas~

"Hi, I saw your stuff on the web about Vito. I was a good friend of his, and Szou. I was the person responible for him moving to Cotati. He was the same age as my father, and he was like a2nd father to me.I like to say he taught me the things my father didn't know about.
I really enjoted your website. i am an agent for a New York artist.
I spoke to Loretta recently, Vito's wife after Szou. She is now Jara. the had a kid, Sophia, and another one i didnt know.
i have a photo copy of the book fo Vitos sculptures. If you dont have the book, i can send it to you. Also I saw Mondo Hollywood, which was recently rereleased, and it has the best footage of Vito and gang.
I would like to meet you one day when i am in ca.
i now live in Minnesota, and France.
All the Best

Robert Aminzade
Do you ever hear from the Cotati crowd?
p.s i could not contact you from your website, so i did it by myspace, but i just signed up to contact you,"

Robert sent me, via snail mail, some xerox copies of xeroxed copies of a catalog from one of Vito Paulekas' sculpture shows. I scanned (with the new scanner!), visually tweaked, then turned them into a cool little webby slide show:

good tutorial on flash dropdown menus?

Hey everyone, I posted this in some of the web design/flash tribes, but haven't gotten any useful responses yet...

Anyone know of a good tutorial on Flash dropdown/popup menus beyond the basics? I'm looking for more advanced actionscripting that deals with invisible button overlap for separate side-by side menus in particular.

Thanks

There were these cute DVD players at WalMart for only $30.00, in pink and in purple. My portable broke a few months ago, so I bought the pink one. But it's just a player, does not have a monitor. Both our TVs are old--too old to hook up a DVD player without an RF modulator. I asked the guy at WalMart if I could hook up the DVD player to my PC and he gave me the "that depends" answer. My PC does not have a DVD reader, just a CD reader, but the PC is fairly new--about 3 years old. So, does anyone here know if this is possible?

While my hubby was watching Pirates of the Caribbean, I sat with my Powerbook and slapped together this slideshow. On the big screen Johnny Depp was doing his fine thing, on my little screen 26 works on paper I've photographed the last couple years became a cyber art extravaganza.
There are portfolios stashed all over the house- I've always been prolific. It is so fun to share the images with other eyes...
More to come- but for now take a peek:

http://homepage.mac.com/eilsel/art1/art1.html

No warm white wine in plastic cups in poured from a box or sweating cheese cubes at this art opening!

A few years back a car ran over a fire hydrant on the bottom of our hill. One of our neighbors had just seen it happen driving home. He told Bob and I what was going on. Bob grabbed his camera and our posse scampered the 4+ blocks down to see the spectacle.

That is just the beginning...

Any Web Programming advice?

Being a BodyGeek and not a web geek, I would like to learn more about programming and the Internet. [big subject...I know] I've finally got my own site and would like to run a few different programs. Currently, I have phpbb on it and would like to make simple changes [like my own logo instead of the phpbb one].

I know I need to know HTML and MySql, but are there more things I should know? Does anyone have recommendations on where to start?

Okay gals, we have an issue. I have met some very cool guys on the geek dating tribe and I can't for the life of me, figure out what events will draw the chicks. This last event had the best ratio of chicks to guys[3:5], though one was not available to guys, and the other I had to beg to go, though she enjoyed herself when she did.

What do I do? What will get the women out to meeet geeky guys?

Help?

Excuse my rant but I work in a web development team of about seven men and I'm just craving female voices to speak to. Where are all the women who are getting busy with CSS, CMS and RSS? You must be out there but somehow I can't seem to find you and I'm stuck drowning in these man-built platforms like Drupal. Does anyone else feel like they are all alone?

I am listening to an album called "Gospel Chestnuts" (for the first time in years) right now, the cut called "I'm Tired" by the Bright Lights Quartet. This true chestnut of audio has lived on a cassette tape since I originally recorded the actual VINYL Record from a friend.
I LOVE it!
My favorite is the original version of "Progidal Son" by Rev Robert Wilkins. Mick Jagger sung this tune on Beggars Banquet. This gospel recording is what inspired him. And I can listen to it because I DIGITIZED IT! It's in iTunes now- not a cassette anymore! YAY!
Last night I got the rack of gear up and running. I'm playing the cassettes through a Nakamichi deck into my Motu 896 Firewire audio interface and recording with GarageBand, then importing the cuts into iTunes on the music server iMac.
I've digitized the Ventures, B-52's Cosmic Thing, Tippy A-GoGo"s SOUL-O-Works, a radical tape of "precious messages" I saved from my old answering machine, and several other tapes. The well grounded turntable's focus is funky 45's right now. I am enjoying listening to things I love after a long time- it's like a happy reunion or homecoming.

Here's a snapshot of the special space attached to our iMac music slave/server assembled to enable my current digitize-the-audio frenzy...

The Pink Party...

I was looking through my box of photos the other day, and came upon some negatives of pictures I haven't seen in years. I sent the original prints to the author writing a book about the wild party and music scene I was part of in Athens, GA. He wanted them for the book because they were taken at an epoch party of mine, The Pink Party. I never got the prints back...

Finding these negatives was inspiration to purchase a PrimeFilm 1800i film scanner. The negatives are traumatized- scratches, dust, etc from storage. Being able to digitalize them myself is satisfying! I am having so much fun tweaking the images. I'm learning a lot of new tricks as I proceed.

I made a slideshow page to share the results with my clamoring to see these long lost pix fellow Athenians. I thought to post the page here. That film scanner is well worth the $80 it cost. The Pink Party slideshow grows as I finish up groups of negatives...

http://homepage.mac.com/eilsel/Pink_Party/index.html

I have so many cool negatives from other epoch events I can hardly wait to scan MORE.

All the others worked fine. Safari actually has the coolest effect when the marble thumbnails load!

My Powerbook Project

I am in ultra geek mode ya'll. I took apart my old 667Mhz
Titanium Powerbook. It's screen quit working last year. Actually, it
did not quit working 100%, otherwise I wouldn't be taking the time to
"fix" it.

The screen would work if someone sort of "twisted" it. Then you could
SEE what was going on. I could also log into it via our network. The
computer part worked fine. I believe there is some problem with the
data getting to the screen to be seen.

I bought a service manual a couple months ago. Yesterday I spent a
couple hours taking it all the way apart because that is the only way
to get to the screen's cables. I believe it needs a new data cable
that links the screen with the motherboard.

But before I spend the bucks for that, I am going to reassemble the
computer. Why? FOR TWO REASONS: 1) I want to see if it magically
works 100% when it is reassembled, and 2) I want to see if I can
reassemble it and have it work at all. HA!

If it doesn't work screen-wise but the computer does- then I'll buy
the new cable. If it works 100%, then I don't have to buy anything
new. If I can't put it together at all, I will take time to learn
what I did wrong and fix it to where it was at before I took it apart.

The machine is in pieces on my glass coffee table. Hindsight being
20/20, I wish I had labeled which little screws go with which part.
They are all the same size, but they are different lengths.

And the manual doesn't tell you what order to assemble it, only how
to disassemble it. Hmmmm...

So I'll keep ya'll posted. Wish me good geek luck!

Someone entered my site at WebbieWorld!

I did a little search for some of the keywords I use in the head of my web pages the other day. I found my personal site,

http://LJMichel.com

is included in a list of ART websites at "Webbie World". Somebody submitted it, I know for sure I didn't!
Cool.

I put a link to place a vote on the contact page at LJMichel.com, and thought I'd post the link here too.

http://www.webbieworld.com/vote.asp?recordno=326880

I'm not sure what being one of their Personal Picks is good for...
Except maybe more traffic; that I like!

Ever since I found out that I was on their list I've noticed lots of sites I visit have a "WebbieWorld" link somewhere.

***So there you have it***

I have been renovating my personal site. I think of my site as bait with which to attract fresh clients. There have been a couple nibbles already! Any day one will strike.

After having to recover from the CNS Vasculitis thing that had me in ICU last Halloween for a week, I am finally free of two notoriously evil mind mushing meds for 3 weeks now. This geek brain is awake and ready to take on new horizons. Yippee!

So here's the link

http://LJMichel.com

There are still a few things I am planning to add or change this weekend, and the home page/menu is different every day thanks to a javascript action. Let me know what you think by hitting the contact page to send an email.

i'm a girl, obviously i don't know how to set-up a router

this is the second roommate situation in a row where this has happened. roommates, happen to be guys, they don't set up the router properly, and their mismanagement of it means the connection is constantly dropping, having all sorts of problems. i try to explain how to properly set up the router, how to download firmware updates, different encryption protocols, positioning of the router for minimum interference (meaning, thru walls and whatnot)... and for some reason, they just look at me, like i have no idea what i'm talking about, and the distinct impression i'm getting is, "you're a girl, obviously you don't know how to set up a router as well as i do."

like tonight, where i've been living the past 5 months, the wireless situation was a mess when i moved in, major bandwidth drag due to neighborhood leeching off us, etc, router constantly dropping the connection. i fixed it when i moved in. has been working properly for several months, without a hitch.
new guy moves in 2 days ago, and tonight he decides he's going to "fix" the router. i find this out because i'm uploading files to a new domain i'm working on, and suddenly the connection starts dropping out repeatedly. i go out to find out why.

within 3 hours, he has completely crashed the existing router (g) and he's brought out an ancient router that's b.... and he tells me that he removed the encryption i'd set up to deter the neighborhood leeches (they were the ones who kept crashing our router) because the encryption i used could be known to reduce the bandwith speed. the mb/s i was clocking per second wasn't fast enough? what exactly do you do that requires faster speeds? i mean, you couldn't possibly download more porn than *i* do...

and i'm not saying these things out loud to the guys, of course, i'm just trying to get them to put it back the way it was, and they're looking at me like, you're a girl, obviously we know more about these things than you do. and i knew they were doing this, because they were really dumbing down the technical concepts, but would talk normal to each other, and the new guy tells me, well, b routers were the first kind of routers that existed, and then g came along next... and i'm just looking at him, having no idea how to respond to this. it's like he's knocking on my door trying to explain what the acronym "html" stands for, when inside my room i'd been editing php scripts and converting an excel database to mysql.

i finally, after 3 hours of this, said, "you know what? just because i'm a girl, it doesn't mean i'm STUPID about TECH stuff!" all of a sudden, they start using big words, and talking to me straight. THANK you. thankfully, i have remembered to keep my humor, and i have them laughing with me. and when he throws that whole "well, it's obviously your mac that's the problem" at me, i just growl at him and say, "don't EVEN go there."

by the way, i am not male-bashing here, i just find it odd this is the second roommate situation in a row where this has happened. anyone other geekgirls ever encountered this? next place i move to, i have to ENSURE i get put in charge of the wireless. i may be quiet and shy, but i am geek, and YOU CAN'T MESS WITH MY INTERNET!

Tribe alternative starting to get going...

We're really starting to hum over at http://www.free-association.net ...we have some forums started, profiles, image galleries, blogs, and the next revision should bring forums (or as we're calling 'em, "Associations") to a much more recognizably "Tribe-like" functionality. We're only at an 0.1 release level right now, so it's only going to get better...and that DEFINITELY includes the UI, so don't worry about that yet.

BTW, we REALLY need PHP/HTML coders and database grrls!

What is a girl to do? Yes, i like to watch documentaries and read books with ten dollar words- why do girls like me always get caught in a maelstrom of men being all high-status, 'I know more about Palestine than Anyone else, especially bitches!' What can I freakin say? I am sad, because women are always saying, 'I am not a femenist, femenism is over' but the culture says, get on your knees, btich. What can I say? I like hiphip videos, too, but do we need so much ass-jiggling? And why don't they get to wear pants? My parents are rennovating their house and I am helping them, and today I was loading the dumpster, which actually turned out to be cleaning up after months of different crews of men making a mess. The roofers were there. They smoked ciggaretts on their break and watched me clean the dumpster. They were like, 'Hey, check it out, a bitch is cleaning up after us!' 'Sweet!' "I know, I love it when bitches have to clean up after me!' visit me at http://hildebootstrap.blogspot.com

Geekgirl fashion secrets

Ok, in keeping with my girlie theme I thought I'd post a list of fashion secrets that I, personally, have scientifically analyzed and proven to work. Yes, you too can be privy to these wonderful secrets, for the low, low price of $19.95!! Ok just kidding about the last part, I am getting all excited about my fellow geekgirls and our interesting discussions. :D

But seriously, here are some things that I have found to work. I am going to put them in order of maintenance (low to high) so that yall don't freak out. Please feel free to add to this list of things you have found to work!

* smile!
+ this makes the endorphins run which makes you a happier person
+ you look nicer when you smile, and it makes people around you more amenable
+ cheap

* jane iredale powder (mineral)
+ since it is made out of minerals, your face has this nice shine and you don't need to wear nearly as much makeup to cover marks. My dad even noticed the difference.
+ doesn't cause zits
- expensive (~$40-50)

* wear sunscreen on your face
+ I think I will appreciate this a lot more 10-20 years from now
- more stuff to do in the morning.

* waxing your eyebrows
+ just a little change but it makes such a difference!
- takes time
- not too expensive
- waxing can hurt

* Putting lotion, all over your skin, every day, after you get out of the shower.
+ Your skin will be really soft.
+ A free body massage every day!
- takes time.
- takes a lot of lotion

* Getting facials, once every 4-6 weeks
+ your skin really does look better
+ zits heal really fast and there is much less scarring
- expensive
- takes time
+ but what a nice relaxing time it is!

* Getting your arms waxed. This when I first heard of it I thought it was absolutely ridiculous but tried it anyway.
+ your arms are supernice and soft
- seems absolutely ridiculous
- waxing isn't always painless

[Ok technically, I stole these last two from "Secrets of the Strippers"]

* Brazilian bikini wax
+ no worries
- ouch!
- you pee funny

Ah yes, another way to waste time on the net. ;-)

Go to google.com and type "(your name) needs" Then pick the 5 funniest ones there.

If your name is Jane, you would put this in to the search engine: "Jane needs"

you got the idea

These are mine:

MANA's needs assessment
Mana needs to be left open
Please call 1800NEEDMANA for all your mana needs
MANA needs to process your membership
Mana needs to be adjusted a bit in the requirements

Women in Tech website looking for help

Are you passionate about technology? Interested in seeing more women in leadership roles in the industry?

I am the content editor, primary webmaster, tech support department, and member services department for WITI. WITI (Women in Technology International -- www.witi.com) is dedicated to helping tech-savvy women attain their professional goals through connections, resources, & opportunities within a supportive environment of women committed to helping each other. WITI's mission is to empower women worldwide to achieve unimagined possibilities and transformations through technology, leadership and economic prosperity.

WITI is in need of an extra pair of hands. We are (I am) in need of someone (possibly several someones) who can handle tech support and membership emails, foster community on our discussions boards, and handle light graphics work. Most of this work is detail-oriented and directly affects how people perceive WITI.

We're also looking for someone (could be the same person) who can handle routine website updates. This person MUST be able/willing to code HTML by hand. Use of a WYSIWYG HTML editor like GoLive, FrontPage, or DreamWeaver is incompatible with the site structure. Familiarity with HTML required, familiarity with CSS highly preferred. Some familiarity with W3C standards of code/design preferred. Be comfortable with graphics work, preferably Photoshop fluent. Illustrator and ImageReady a bonus. In most cases, this person would be inserting new content into existing structure.

WITI wants to see more women at the top levels of technology and other companies and believes that through support and networking this is an attainable goal. If you might be interested in helping make that happen, and you are comfortable working remotely, being proactive, and learning as you go, please email cgilman@corp.witi.com to start a conversation.

the passcards are so annoying and it seems to log me out of websites all the time. Particularly ebay where I'm logged in and then find items to start watching only to discover I'm not logged in as me!

often when i hit the back button it takes me back to the previous SITE, and not the previous page!

it's driving me bonkers! bad bad netscrape!!

i really like firefox - but the hubby already comendered it...

Okay, I've got a new love in my life and it's my DS. Since it's got online gaming now, I've been utterly ignoring just about everything else.
If there's anyone who wants to race with me, send me a message for my friend code.
I imagine, I'll have to post something similar once Animal Crossing comes out. Goddess, I love interior decorating-based lifestyles!

Hey there!
I'm a geek, I worship geek girls. I figure this would be an appropriate tribe.
Credentials: World of Warcraft junkie, Nintendo addict, spent extra time in school just to take more journalism classes(GPA in my major: 3.8), I used to work in a comic/gaming store and still have a weakness for anime. I love to edit video, for what it's worth. I also homebrew, which means I've got a taste for fine alcohol and can discuss boozemaking for hours on end.
Degree: BA in Journalism, minors in Sociology and Religious Studies
Feel free to ask anything, I'm pretty open.

Email choices

Ok so the gist of the problem is I have way too many email addresses.

I've got multiple addresses associated with various domains, mostly because for a while that seemed like a good way to prevent spam - I'd use nameofsite@mydomain.com so I'd know if I started getting third party emails. This has become 1. too hard to keep track of and 2. not that necessary b/c most sites these days have an opt out and I'm not getting spammed as the result of signing up for services anymore.

On top of that I have a POP account from before I had my own websites which has been my personal address for years. I also have a yahoo account that I use for some things. I've been experimenting with yahoo's premium service, which lets me read and write mail from my other POP accounts. This is pretty close to an ideal situation since I can see evertyhing in one place and it's not stuck on one machine. The problem is that the main pop account I use has too tight security to allow yahoo to grab it. It's a pain to have to read and write mail in more that one place. So...I'm looking to maybe choose a new main email address that I can use inside yahoo.

Another feature of yahoo premium is the ability to create throw-away emails, like I can do with my own domains. I'm considering having one of the throw-aways be the email I use to sign up for websites. Don't you sort of hate that sites use your email address as your login name though?

I'm thinking it might make sense for my main address to be neither a web-based email like yahoo or gmail nor even one of my domains because it allows me to use it for both people who know me and people who don't. Then again, there are times I want to give an address out that does identify me, e.g. one of the domains - or even the yahoo address which by default is also my yahoo IM. This is what has been driving me crazy. Do I want my name in my email address or not??

I've also been trying out bluebottle.com - they have a trusted delivery model where people that email me have to verify they are a human being. I'm reluctant to take it as my main email because I wonder 1. will people be turned off by the verification? and 2. is the company stable enough that my email address will stay around? The good thing about bluebottle is that I can read and write emails for it inside the yahoo premium account. I'm leaning towards it being my primary email address.

What I really want to do is narrow down to maybe 3 email addresses. One for people who know me (bluebottle?) one for people who don't (yahoo?) and one throwaway.

Any advise is appreciated. Thanks!

OK... you know those embarasing moments directly related to your geekness. I am at goth club.... and this girl who has been speaking to my friend gets up... she has a crown royal bag.... so naturally in a loud voice (over the music) i exclaim "cool... dice bag... you must game!" ... the look on her face tells me... 'umm no...i just thought it would be cool to use a crown royal bag as a purse...' ...feeling awful... i then went on to make it worse by trying to rally support from those around me that the ONLY use for a crown royal bag is to hold DICE!!!

Mac users: How to KILL THE TRIBE ADS!

Hi, everyone. Wanna know how to kill the ads? I'll tell ya.

Go to this link:
http://www.beatnikpad.com/archives/2003/03/08/adblocking

BUT...you need to also make the following changes:
1) For Camino users, the path is actually
/Users/[yourname]/Library/Application Support/Camino/chrome

and 2) I added the following block of text to the userContent.css file:
/* Tribe ads */
DIV[CLASS="OAS"] { display: none ! important }

So...download the file, make the change above, follow the directions for your browser of choice (including quitting/relaunching if necessary)—works with Safari, Camino (with the above noted modification in file path), Firefox, Mozilla, OmniWeb, and likely Netscape.

Voila! An ad-free tribe existence.

After having $1500 dollars pretty much stolen by Dell (they cancelled our order and kept our money) we are looking for another computer comany. At this point we're "one bitten twice shy" so we want a bit of advice on who to go with.
It will be pretty much just a home desktop computer. We'd like to surf the net, email, word processing, spread sheets, quickbooks, CD & DVD burning, some image manipulation & video editing. I'd lke something fast in the neighborhood of $1500.
I know everyone has his/her favorites... let them be known ;)

I thought GeekGirls would be a perfect place to connect. BTW I -=love=- it that of all the tribes at 7:30 in the A-fraking-M, this one has the most members who are actually online.

As part of my campaign promise I said that I would seek out more geeks and geek fans. So what I'm saying is that is anyone here is looking to date, looking for a geek or geek fan, please come play with us.

Oh, and among the requests was to find a woman who won't run screaming in to the night after a guy mentions Battlestar Galactica.

Does anyone know anyone like this?

Good afternoon, folks! I've recently been hired to help a family start a new gaming club/cyber cafe company. I'm writing here because I wanted to run the basic idea for the club past other gamers and get a feel for what the masses think. The owners have a new kind of idea for how the club's going to be run and it's pretty unusual. I had a big long (really long) post about it that I was planning to put on here, but after a suggestion from one of the mods here on Tribe I posted it with Yahoo instead and now I'm just posting the link. So, please, if you've got some time, check out the page, read about the club and let me know what you think! Thanks for your time and take care!
It's especically important if that Admin is a girl geek!

Personally I am hoping I get some good coffee at work, and some geek gadgets!

"WRONG COMPUTER" - bios issue?

hi there,

posting here with a plea for help on a Toshiba Satellite 5205 s705 notebook...

Sooo... I just got it back from the service center who replaced a HD that crapped out after 6 months. when I try to do a new install with the original toshiba discs, it gives me a "WRONG MACHINE" error. I dug around online, and it seems it has to do with the DMI configuration in the BIOS which has to be updated when you change a piece of hardware. The morons at RAF computer have done everything from flat out lying to me (tryign to tell me at first that the bad C drive was from someone else and the second completely different bay-style drive was the one I bought from them, until I said I had all the receipts & serial numbers so let's check), to making absurd, shot-in-the-dark suggestions ('it must have something to do with your original install discs'... which I've used probably 20-30 times to install windows on this machine, never with a problem). I told them what I thought it was - the dmi config, which apparently can only be edited using an .exe program specific to your model, that Toshiba provides to service centers. However, they want to charge me just to look at it, I really don't think they know at ALL what they're doing, and they refuse to let me have the dmicfg.exe file specific to my model so I can do it myself.

in short, what I have now is a laptop with new hard drive, that only boots to a C prompt and refuses my original install discs. My question is - am I correct, is it the dmi, and if so, does anyone know where I might get this file? Or is there some other way to edit this stuff in the BIOS? I'm really more of a macHead so I'm a bit of a fish out of water here, though I can get around in a DOS shell if I need to. I am aware that ye Authorized Service Center shoudl do it for free, but well, I'm in the Netherlands where service centers are few and far between, and my guess is that I'm going to get similar service as that of RAF.

if you have any advice, many thanks in advance... best,

Ursula

Hello Geek Girls

I've recently gotten very interested in building my own mini PC inside an old radio (to serve as the house jukebox). Have any of you done this kind of stuff? Would you be interested in getting together in a group like a quilting bee (only it would be a Computer Bee) and building a computer?

I can post what I've found out so far from the various PC mod sites and books if there is any interest.

Wanna participate in a survey for women in technology?

Hey gals,

If you are reading this, I'm under the impression that you are a woman in the field of technology, and I was hoping that you might participate in an upcoming project.

I had a long chat with a friend a few nights ago about the obstacles that females in technology face. I'm not talking about blatant shit like salary cuts and sexual harassment -- even though they DO happen, heh. I'm referring to the general undercurrent that exists regarding how females in the sciences are perceived. For example, I can't tell you how many times throughout my life I've been told that more men are in math and science because men are more logical. This doesn't only come from people I'd consider sexist, it also seems to be a part of post-feminist ideology in accepting inherent differences and so forth. I've always felt that if girls weren't told that they're less logical, aka "doomed from the start",
they would be much more likely to get into technology.

So here's my thought. I'll pick 3-4 girls and 3-4 guys, each who are in college for technology or have chosen it as their profession. I'll give each person a short interview and post them without saying names or genders. I'll have people who read the article comment through a form on who they think is male and who they think is female, detailing why. I'm interested in what it says about people's perception of women in technology -- and how it effects the women themselves. For example, say a commenter responds, "I think that persons x,y, and z are women because they seem more interested in artistic things like Flash and web design, rather than more technical aspects". What does that mean? That people have false expectations of women? Or true ones? That women feel uncomfortable working outside of those expectations? That society has affected women's expectations of themselves? What if the guess is right? Wrong?

Afterwards, I'd gather the results, reveal the true identities, and post a follow-up interview, possibly with questions pertaining to the guesses. I don't want to go into this with any sort of bent or hypothesis. I'm not trying to prove anything. I'd just like to open up some dialogue.

If you'd like to be interviewed, please click the link below to fill out my questionairre. Not everyone who fills it out will be selected, but this will help me make a decision.

Thanks!!

The survey is titled:
"Survey for Women in Technology"

"I am interested in writing an article exploring the perceptions surrounding women in technology. I plan to pick 3-4 girls and 3-4 guys, each of whom are in college for technology or have chosen it as their profession. I'll give each person a short interview and post them without saying names or genders. I'll have people who read the article comment through a form on who they think is male and who they think is female, detailing why. I'm interested in what it says about people's perception of women in technology -- and how it effects the women themselves.

If you are interested in being one of the interviewees, please fill out this questionairre. Participants will be chosen based largely on honesty, so please don't be afraid to be brutal! I will also select a diverse range, so I'm looking for web designers, admins, programmers, graphic designers, project managers -- you name it!"

To participate, please click on the link below.

Sincerely,

Erica (webmaster@thanksforthemammaries.net)

Do any of you, who consider yourself to be geekgirls, look for men on those annoying dating site?

I just assumed that you would be magnets for geek guys, but let's just say for some reason one of you isn't constantly being chased by an ocean of geek boys who think you are the end all.

which descriptions would be most appealing?
1. single male, likes 4 dimensional chess and quantum mechanics, looking for female analog.
2. Geek boy seeks geek girl for fun and adventure
3. male seeks female who will not laugh at his star wars collection or comic books
4. [fill in the blank]

thanks in advance for your input :)

Why I think Red-heads are hot...
Why I think dark-skinned women are hot...
but put all three together and I get the heebie jeebies.
actually red-heads with dark-skin is a bit weird too?

Linux? What flavor?

Hey, I am starting to teach myself Linux as of today. I quit my job yesterday and will have tons of free time I need to fill up. That all being said I am going to go to Frys today and check out what they have as far as software and books. But does anyone have any recomendations on great links or resources on the web to pull from?

I most likely will download a free version a linux admin recomended to me. (http://www.linuxiso.org/) But I am going to be concentrating on RedHat since that seems to be what this area gravitates twards. I have an ancient version (5.1) but will most likey also buy an updated one.

Just curious as to what you ladies recomend.

I just found a site where you can get images to change your Logins, Wall Paper, Boot Screens, Icons and ExplorerBar Icons.

http://www.themexp.org

Some of the themes hurt my head, while others are really cool.

Hello for the First Time

Hello Hello. I am new to this Tribe, and I was wondering how everyone was?
I do not really know how to properly introduce myself on these things. My handle is TehBo0tab3gga, and I, uh, like Ring Pops and Pixie Stix a lot? (^.^)

I guess on top of my hello, I might as well attempt to strike up some type of conversation...
What are some 'geeky' things you all enjoy doing?
I guess that means: What kind of 'geek' are you?

heh I hate to start with something that sounds so stereotypical, but I am unsure of what to ask.

What is it about smart, clever women who not only hold their own, but succeed in a realm typically characterized by less-than-desirable men? I can't get enough of that je-ne-sais-quais.
