ouch. then ill offer my apologies, was trying to be polite.I was taught that a gentleman always offers polite terms and that being called a Lady was of the highest regard. what term would you prefer?

No apology necessary, this is just my preference. There was a very interesting discussion in the Burning Woman tribe about this subject (full disclosure: thread was started by me). I wanted to know what other people thought of the term "lady," as I found it patently irritating. Growing up I heard it most in the context of sexist scolding, i.e., "...that's not very ladylike." Neither, I suppose, was giving the finger to those who would make such a judgment, but c'est la vie.

Some women believe it to be a compliment, as it indicates a certain grace under pressure in all sorts of situations. Others, found it had no weight at all and was interchangeable with woman, female, chick, babe, etc. Others felt as I did. Still others found that terms like "girl" when speaking to a woman was condescending, or that chick, babe, and other nicknames brought up all kinds of associations -- negative or positive -- based on individual experiences in their lives.

But for me, yeah, "lady" is constrictive and outdated. *shrug*

        Cheers,

well then Sistaweotch, then i will defer to your judgement and address you accordingly, is there a respectable term you would prefer? Or perhaps just your name then? a complimentary one that will show respect in general? it makes little difference to me how a person prefers to be addressed so long as its treating people with respect as i like to be a gentleman, im often crude, but never RUDE unless provoked. and you have done nothing to provoke me or to get me to think little of you therefore you are deserving of respect and i would like to addres you in such a way as to reflect that.

i don't love "lady" either. but sometimes i find it interesting to use the word myself when i take on a certain writer/narrative voice. there's an association to the tough working class dude who says, "hey lady'' etc. it has a certain outdated feel to it which makes it loaded and interesting.

LOL True, true, but I can only speak for myself. :) Let's see... common denominator... I don't think there is one, as a group. That's like asking 'what turns men on?' or 'what turns Russian expats on?'. Others have mentioned being able to hold a good conversation - I would add a balance between speaking and listening skills. I'm much better at the latter, and a pleasant voice gets me every time, so I prefer smart storytellers with a dry sense of humor, generally more on the extroverted side. Any kind of random unusual passions or hobbies are a plus. [This is the cliff notes version.]

    I don't mind being called a lady.

The biggest thing for me is a great personality. Of course some kind of physical attraction is needed, but it comes second to personality. Beyond that, anyone that can have a deep, meaningful conversation with me about philosophy or life has got me (one of my weak points, but I love it!).
