Thu, May 5, 2005 - 9:02 AMI have to ask... Why did someone say you weren't really a geek, and what _was_ your geek score? -
-
Re: How Geeky Can you Go!?!?
Thu, May 5, 2005 - 11:05 AMMyhubby was the fella who said I wasn't geeky enough.
Why? Becuase I don't personally invlve myself in quite a few things "geeky", such as:
1.) Multiplayer RPGs - I like to plan video games, but haven't gotten into online games. Even though hubby loves UT and Tribes. I don't care that he plays (and I even encourage him), just not my deal.
2.) Unlike him, I don't have a laptop that I insist on taking on vacation. This makes me crazy! How naked do I need to be to make him close that damn thing? (that was a rhetorical question incidently :)
3.) I don't "do" wireless - why not? Becuase everything I need to do I can do with a cable, and there is just too much to worry about with regard to staying secure. I tend to be very conservative when it comes to security and technolgy, and prefer to enjoy my time off.
It's been a couple of years since I took the geek test. Since I am BORED out of my skull being stuck in an Ethical Hacking class (yes, oxymoron, I know) maybe I'll go take the test and be back with scores in a bit... -

and, 47.92899% even when I take off the bonus points for being a girl geek, and take off "I can think of other things that should get me points on this test". -

Re: How Geeky Can you Go!?!?
Thu, May 5, 2005 - 11:36 PMhmmmm...
1) That's geek social culture, much like B5 and Star Trek/Star Wars - not a requirement to being a geek (see grammar nazism, bad pun generator, juggling, lock-picking, and other associated activities of social geekdom)
2) You sounds like you pace yourself, which, as everyone knows, makes for a longer-lasting and more intensely flavored geek ;)
3) Ah ha! He's got you here! You are <drumroll> ...a closeted security geek!! Realize your geekdom and feel the Pow-ah! *end He-Man theme music*
*muffled giggle*
ok, so I negated the last one just because I could... =)
4) True sign of geekdom. Geek girls do indeed love geek boys.
I wonder what your hubby would score...?

Thu, May 5, 2005 - 4:35 PMAre we bringing our our dead or are we not dead yet???
I'm sure it's not even close to my geekiest, but some examples from this week...
* I chose to forgo dinner one evening to get quests & levels done on EQII
* Crashed AND resurrected my boss' computer
* Found email address for & emailed fave teacher from high school. And got super-excited when he emailed me back.
* Book purchases this week? Thomas Paine, Theodore Sturgeon, Mary Leaky, some literary criticism by Eco, and some turgenev book I'd never heard of...
* Going to see HHGTG Saturday!!
But this week was so busy, I'm lucky I got to geek at all. :-) -

Re: How Geeky Can you Go!?!?
Fri, May 13, 2005 - 2:35 PMI recently inventoried my comic book collection and have to limit my computer game playing to 4 hours a week so that I can keep up with my studies.
Besides I am getting a PhD in an academic field, I think that in itself might be frightfully geeky (which is good!)
Dating a man who doesn't "get" Monty Python would be pretty much like dating a republican I think, no firm foundation on which to build a relationship, you know? -

Re: How Geeky Can you Go!?!?
Wed, June 1, 2005 - 8:05 PMOkay here goes--
I'm a librarian
14 years experience in technology installing, troubleshooting
Taught technical writing for 4 years
Was on the Internet starting in 1991, started programming in html (one workshop) in 1994
I collect robots
Went to my first scifi convention in 1974, with my great-uncle, an uber scifi geek
That makes me a legacy
Took critical theory and film theory in grad school and liked it
Love Scifi channel
I love office supply stores and finally
I'm a project analyst and my bosses so worship my anal retentiveness. They get psyched when I come up with new ways of doing things. I work with programmers, project managers, and network engineers and I feel like the translator in the fucking United Nations. It rocks.
This tribe rocks too. That is why the boys must adore us ;)
And yeah -- academia = geekiness to the tenth power. to live it and survive you have to be a righteous geek
