I am so excited for this! OMG - this has the potential to be as good as SW Episode 3!

Talk about "faint praise"...yeesh. This is gonna clean the clock of anything Lucas can disgorge. Man only had one decent SW trilogy in him, alas.

        Hi Sonya,

As bad as Ep 1&2 were, from what I have seen at Celebration 3, and read (from Kevin Smith's review), Episode 3 is where Lucas makes ammends, for Ep1&2, as well as for remastering the original triology.

        I can only hope.

So, bcak on topic, anyone have the soop on why all of a sudden the River character is turned into a combination Buffy/Trinity type fighting "kick butt and taking numbers" type of persona? The scary part of her is supposed to be her brain! Talk about mucking tih continuity! I may need to have a talk with Mr Whedon after I see the Serenity flick in September!

What do you mean...? There was an episode where they're trying to rescue Mal from the sadist/mad-scientist guy, and she shoots three guys dead without hardly looking...it's not like she's never done anything deadly/violent before. I have always thought that River was an underutilized character, and Joss has always said that his long-range plan was to flesh out River in later seasons if they hadn't gotten cancelled.

            Mon, May 9, 2005 - 11:42 AM
Yes, she did shot, but she used her brain to figure out where she needed to shoot, and she closed her eyes when she did it.

River is just not a bad ass, ass kicking, ninja like character. That is the job of Captain Tight pants, and his first

Hell, I can shoot a gun and probably even hit the target (with my eyes open) since it is just a matter of aiming, but I can't drop kick anyone. It's a matter of using physical over mental capabilities.....

Most of the scenes of her kicking ass in the trailer were martial-arts moves, and as anyone who has ever studied martial arts can tell you, they are ALL about the mind and how you use it.
Overcoming fear to even stand up to baddies is a mental accomplishment. I bet she would kick Jane's ass any day. :)

                Hi Melissa,

I would agree with you to some extent, that martial arts is about training your mind, but there is also a certain level of physical training that must be coupled with it to achieve awesome results.

That part of the trailer with her going all ninja like just made me go
                " humm..... "

And to make my day just get a little more depressing, just found out about a sneak screening in Adventura FL! I was totally set to go, until I mapquested where Aventura is from me (I am not a native floridian and I don't know my florida geography very well) ... only to find out that Adventura is about a 9 hour drive away :(

Hmm, I suppose I can agree, but I guess I figured all along that this was what that government lab had been doing to her brain with their experiments, turning her into a killing machine...why else would they want to find her so desperately? For sure, she did seem rather weak and fragile in the first half of the season...but I attribute that to the fact that she was really still 'injured' from the lab and her brain was trying to sort itself out.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Remember, she was also woken up way too early and Simon wasn't clear how ok she'd be because of that. There were also indications that reality for her is a bit twisted because she doesn't know what's real and what is still only a possibility, so once she's firmly grounded in reality, the fun'll start... I *almost* feel sorry for the guys wiith blue gloves... almost...

Actually, there's more than enough precedent in the show to suggest these abilities...the flash-memorized target shooting was already mentioned, but think of it this way... Yes, she had to use her brain to kill them, but she also had to know how to shoot a gun reflexively. Little girl like that, shooting a gun? Not without LOTS of practice.

Also, they made a point when first introducing the character (thru Simon's monologue) that both her mental AND physical abilities (e.g. dance, mentioned in the monologue) were off the proverbial charts. In a sense, she's supposed to be a true über-human in all senses of the word.

Gymnastic, spying, security systems, etc. abilities were all shown in greater or lesser form in various eps. Plus the capacity for random, almost casual violence (e.g. her slicing of Jayne followed by "he loos good in red"). It was made pretty clear they were turning her into some kind of psychic (or close enough for gov't work) spy/assassin for the Alliance.

PS: let's HOPE Lucas makes good on Eps 1 & 2. Jar Jar alone would have been worth a cehtury or 2 in Purgatory in my book, if not outright damnation. :-P

I've loved Star Wars my whole life, but I am much more excited about Serenity. I just haven't been "into" the prequels as much as the originals. The story & characters just didn't have the same depth.

Watching the preview it seems like it'll be a good movie... Not sure on the choice of actors it's possible that it might end up being a little of the cheesy side.

I Agree with Rihanha, I'm not into the new Star Wars at all... The first one really Sucked... the 2nd one was OK.... I'm hoping the third one will be good if for nothing else but the big space war!

          The choice of actors!?

          Oh my dear one...

You have an official assignment - rent the Firefly series from Netflix. Watch them all and report back.

          Class Dismissed.

Uh, oh I seem to be missing something important. Is it because I don't have cable? Please share with me (as a fellow geek-girl) what the scoop with "Serenity" is!!!

                Re: Serenity

                Sun, May 1, 2005 - 3:21 PM
well, the show's been off the air for a year or two now, so cable wouldn't help at this point...The movie Serenity is based on the series "Firefly" that was created by Joss Whedon, the guy who brought you Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's a genius show that should have been on the air a good long time, but the network fucked it over. Don't feel bad if you haven't heard of it, I never saw it when it was on the air, either, I didn't see a stitch of it until an ex-BF of mine told me about it.
It's a very unique show, sort of a space western/sci-fi comedy. Great characters, cool technology, same sort of snarky, smart dialogue Buffy had, but with a twist. It's set 500 years in the future, but the future that Joss imagines is one where the galaxy is ruled by a large mega-government called the Alliance, who the characters are all avoiding at all costs. There's a captain, Mal, and his first mate, Zoe, a bad-ass warrior babe, who fought futilely with the resistance in a epic galactic war in which the Alliance were the victors. These resistance members are called "browncoats". After the war, Mal buys a beatup old decomissioned ship of the Firefly class, fixes it up, and names it Serenity. It is his escape from his checkered and sad past. He hires a pilot named Wash who ends up marrying Zoe. He also hires a young woman named Kaylee to be the ship's mechanic, and a tough-guy named Jane to be the heavy.

They survive by doing random, dubiously-legal odd jobs across many planets, where they are always dodging the authorities.
They also take on passengers for money, which include a preacher or "shepherd" named Book, who is not as docile as he seems, a young doctor named Simon, and his genius sister River, who he has rescued from a shadowy government research lab.
They get into all sorts of scrapes and adventures, and the storytelling is excellent. Even the theme song is really moving and catchy. (I love that little banjo/steel guitar solo in the middle!)
You really ought to rent the series from Netflix or Blockbuster and see how you like it before you go see the movie, which I suspect is geared toward the existing fans and will have little backstory to explain things.

Did I cover it well enough, grrls? :)

Shiny indeed. Sigh. I tried to get a ticket to the Seattle sneak-preview show (one of 10 they are doing around the country) and it sold out the same day the post hit the Browncoats list/site.
