After having $1500 dollars pretty much stolen by Dell (they cancelled our order and kept our money) we are looking for another computer comany. At this point we're "one bitten twice shy" so we want a bit of advice on who to go with.
It will be pretty much just a home desktop computer. We'd like to surf the net, email, word processing, spread sheets, quickbooks, CD & DVD burning, some image manipulation & video editing. I'd lke something fast in the neighborhood of $1500.
I know everyone has his/her favorites... let them be known ;)

Just out of curiousity, how can Dell cancel your order AND keep your money?

Why not consider building your own? I just built a P4 2.8, DVD DL, 2 drives, 1gb RAM, 19" LCD monitor, etc, etc. for under $1K.

Wondering the same....Dell is not allowed to keep your money if you don't get something for it! I've bought a few products from Dell and had fine service from them. Sorry to hear that you didn't.

I agree with KC...build your own if you can! I prefer this method. You get EXACTLY what you want. I got most of my parts from newegg.com

If building your own machine isn't an option, I'd say yes, check out alienware as Paula recommended. You can't go wrong with them. Top-notch machines and very pretty to look at... Not so keen on Sony's Vaio series as they've been known to be finicky. I know a few people who have HP desktops that have been reliable. If all you're doing are basics like you listed, you should be okay with them.

GET A MAC!!!! Mac Minis are nicely priced, though if you want, go for the iBook. Plus Apple gives an educational discount if you are a student/teacher. I have not had a single problem with my iBook since I got it 3 years ago! Plus Macs are really good with Photoshop, and there is a nice video editing software as well (can't think of the name of it right now)

First of all I'd try and get back that Money that Dell stole! How is that possible?
Anyway, I own a small computer sales and service company www.emeraldtech.biz and one of our old slogans wad "Dude Don't Buy a Dell!"

If you want to play games don't buy a Mac... If you don't have any need for computer games even I would have to say you would be better off with a mac in terms of total cost of ownership.

If you buy a PC see if you can find a local small business that does custom built systems, most of the time they will offer great support and you will be able to call somebody in your home town rather then in New Deli!

    Good luck
