Ok so the gist of the problem is I have way too many email addresses.
I've got multiple addresses associated with various domains, mostly because for a while that seemed like a good way to prevent spam - I'd use nameofsite@mydomain.com so I'd know if I started getting third party emails. This has become 1. too hard to keep track of and 2. not that necessary b/c most sites these days have an opt out and I'm not getting spammed as the result of signing up for services anymore.
On top of that I have a POP account from before I had my own websites which has been my personal address for years. I also have a yahoo account that I use for some things. I've been experimenting with yahoo's premium service, which lets me read and write mail from my other POP accounts. This is pretty close to an ideal situation since I can see evertyhing in one place and it's not stuck on one machine. The problem is that the main pop account I use has too tight security to allow yahoo to grab it. It's a pain to have to read and write mail in more that one place. So...I'm looking to maybe choose a new main email address that I can use inside yahoo.
Another feature of yahoo premium is the ability to create throw-away emails, like I can do with my own domains. I'm considering having one of the throw-aways be the email I use to sign up for websites. Don't you sort of hate that sites use your email address as your login name though?
I'm thinking it might make sense for my main address to be neither a web-based email like yahoo or gmail nor even one of my domains because it allows me to use it for both people who know me and people who don't. Then again, there are times I want to give an address out that does identify me, e.g. one of the domains - or even the yahoo address which by default is also my yahoo IM. This is what has been driving me crazy. Do I want my name in my email address or not??
I've also been trying out bluebottle.com - they have a trusted delivery model where people that email me have to verify they are a human being. I'm reluctant to take it as my main email because I wonder 1. will people be turned off by the verification? and 2. is the company stable enough that my email address will stay around? The good thing about bluebottle is that I can read and write emails for it inside the yahoo premium account. I'm leaning towards it being my primary email address.
What I really want to do is narrow down to maybe 3 email addresses. One for people who know me (bluebottle?) one for people who don't (yahoo?) and one throwaway.
Any advise is appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Email choices
Thu, October 27, 2005 - 8:54 AMI have had the same hotmail address for years and don't plan on changing just to hide from Spam. Sure I still get some, but it ebbs and flows. I find it MUCH more important that the people who come and go in my life ALWAYS know how to reach me. And it drives me nuts when my friends change their emails like hairstyles. I suggest having one account that you keep forever and never use for signing up on websites, etc. Then have a second if you are really worrid about Spam that is JUST for that purpose. -

Re: Email choices
Fri, October 28, 2005 - 7:36 AMMuse you are so right! I just can't quite decide what the 'one account' should be. I'm now going back to the idea that it should be an address at one of my domains. I plan to keep at least 2 of my sites forever. Even if for some reason I took the sites down I can still park the domain somewhere for email. That would be the one I'd never use for signing up for things on the web.

Re: Email choices
Thu, October 27, 2005 - 9:50 AMI used to strictly use a shell account run on a friend's domain, but it got to be too much of a pain connecting to it via ssh while traveling/at work/etc so I gradually migrated to Gmail, and never regretted it...I do miss having webspace attached to my mail, but there are plenty of free places to post pics and files these days. Gmail is where it's at, and you can set up any number of accounts as spam traps and such. I have 100 invites for Gmail, just PM me and I'll send you as many as you like. :) -

Fri, October 28, 2005 - 7:30 AMCool, I'll keep that in mind. Does Gmail let you read and write from other POP accounts?

That describes the one I'm using as my primary email address right now. In some ways I hate to change it, for the reason Muse states - all my friends have that one and I've used it for a long time. If I could read and write from all of my shell accounts and/or domain emails (let's say I get them down to 2-4!) in one web interface I'd be set. Yahoo premium can almost do it, except for my main email address due to security on that account. -

Re: Email choices
Fri, October 28, 2005 - 9:39 AMI have used yahoo premium for a couple of years. It's great for when I'm traveling, I use it for all of my addresses. I also really like the trash accounts, they are great to spot who sells your address when you do business with them.

Re: Email choices
Fri, October 28, 2005 - 10:02 AMAs it turns out, my migration away from shell was a good call, my friend took down that domain a month or so ago. I still would love to have a shell to play around with Unix-wise, but I don't know anyone running a vanity server anymore...
I don't know for sure about POP options, I haven't used POP mail in ages, but I know there's a section in the Settings page for POP and forwarding...give it a try, it's free and you get 2Gb. PM me whichever of your addresses you like and I'll send you an invite. :)

Re: Email choices
Tue, November 1, 2005 - 7:44 AMSo gmail does not have the ability to download mail from pop accounts. It can be a pop account so I tested if my yahoo premium can read those messages. It seems to be blocked (either by google or yahoo I can't tell).
But gmail does let you fwd to another address - and does it cleanly (no 'Fwd' in the subject, not extra garbage in the body). So I set gmail to fwd everything to my yahoo account and set up the gmail as a send-only address inside yahoo. When I hit reply to a message sent to the gmail address, yahoo automatically switches me to that identity. It's convoluted but it serves the purpose.
Though...what all this has made me realize is that if I can just set up my original shell account (the one I was thinking about retiring) to fwd everything to yahoo I can handle it the same way. So maybe this will bring me back full circle to the same email I had for years - which would be quite nice.

Re: Email choices
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 2:39 PMYahoo! has been so far the best for me... I even got the Small Business pack for my company and everyone loves it... we travel a lot and work from different locations and remote offices all over the world... and yahoo has proven to be the best... specially since I work with older folks who had a hard time getting away from Outlook becuase of its calendar, contacts, and tasks functions which now Yahoo! provides... it even sinks PDA which makes my life easier as the IT Sys admin!!!! Not having to deal with MS is great...
Yahoo can actually hold a bunch of POP account and SBC Yahoo acccounts... we have 5 domains and they all arrive to my one account + teo personal accounts... so it's verys imple to manage all at once...
so I recommend Yahoo all the way! But it doesn't mean I'm not gonna keep all my other accounts... (hotmail, gmail, etc..)
I guess it depends on what you want it for...
