Ok, in keeping with my girlie theme I thought I'd post a list of fashion secrets that I, personally, have scientifically analyzed and proven to work. Yes, you too can be privy to these wonderful secrets, for the low, low price of $19.95!! Ok just kidding about the last part, I am getting all excited about my fellow geekgirls and our interesting discussions. :D
But seriously, here are some things that I have found to work. I am going to put them in order of maintenance (low to high) so that yall don't freak out. Please feel free to add to this list of things you have found to work!
* smile!
+ this makes the endorphins run which makes you a happier person
+ you look nicer when you smile, and it makes people around you more amenable
+ cheap
* jane iredale powder (mineral)
+ since it is made out of minerals, your face has this nice shine and you don't need to wear nearly as much makeup to cover marks. My dad even noticed the difference.
+ doesn't cause zits
- expensive (~$40-50)
* wear sunscreen on your face
+ I think I will appreciate this a lot more 10-20 years from now
- more stuff to do in the morning.
* waxing your eyebrows
+ just a little change but it makes such a difference!
- takes time
- not too expensive
- waxing can hurt
* Putting lotion, all over your skin, every day, after you get out of the shower.
+ Your skin will be really soft.
+ A free body massage every day!
- takes time.
- takes a lot of lotion
* Getting facials, once every 4-6 weeks
+ your skin really does look better
+ zits heal really fast and there is much less scarring
- expensive
- takes time
+ but what a nice relaxing time it is!
* Getting your arms waxed. This when I first heard of it I thought it was absolutely ridiculous but tried it anyway.
+ your arms are supernice and soft
- seems absolutely ridiculous
- waxing isn't always painless
[Ok technically, I stole these last two from "Secrets of the Strippers"]
* Brazilian bikini wax
+ no worries
- ouch!
- you pee funny

Thu, July 8, 2004 - 9:42 AMadditional skin secret.
*Witch Hazel and Tea Tree oil cleansers.
Keeps your skin clean, helps clear zits, makes your skin soft. And totally cheap. Get face wipes (the little disposable cloth wipe things) if you can. They take the chore out of washing your face.
If you're in the UK i suggest the Boots facial wipes. If you're in the US, I'm sure you can find something similiar. -

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Thu, July 8, 2004 - 2:28 PMWear black. You don't have to worry about matching, or having stains show up. You know to throw the item of clothing out when it fades to grey.
Does that count as a fashion secret, or a coping mechanism? ;) -

Yes. :-P

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Thu, July 8, 2004 - 5:07 PMThis only works if you don't have pets. I've learned not to buy black pants. :( -
-
Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Thu, July 8, 2004 - 7:23 PMyeah, cat hair gets in the way of wearing black.
also, no two shades of black seem to be exactly alike. some have green tones, some have blue tones, some have red tones. lots of them get washed out. so i never feel like my black clothing matches enough to wear all black without looking like a slob. matching is important to me... for instance, i'm really big on matching my shoes to my shirt.
-
-
Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Thu, July 8, 2004 - 11:38 PMI wear all black alot. Some tonal mismatching is okay if the textures are differant. Blacks will never exactly match, but they can be close. Like I said, texture is your secret weapon in this.
Also I have a black cat. No worries with the whole cat hair thing. -

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Fri, July 9, 2004 - 7:25 PMmy closet is just filled with nothing but black...i have like 5% of other colors..and it's quite rare to wear light colors for me -
-
Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Sat, July 10, 2004 - 6:34 AMYeah I know what you mean... at some point my closet was full of black clothes too... but then I started buying blue and dark blue, then green... and I realized that those colors were too hot to wear in FL... so now I buy clothes of the same color every six months... and I have discover that I like red a lot... so now I'm buying red things... but if you look at my closet now, you can see the periods of colors that i have gone tru...
and now we have a cat, and everything get cat hair... so it won't matter what color i wear cause even white hair on white clothes still shows! -

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Sat, July 10, 2004 - 8:54 AMI used to wear a lot more black before we got our yellow lab. There were five black puppies in the litter, but did my hubby want one of those??? NO! Of course not!
But I wouldn't trade him for any other doggie of any color, so...I wear a lot more brown and tan now to reduce the amount of brushing required by both my clothing and the dog (the only do I know that HATES to be brushed).

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Thu, December 29, 2005 - 2:03 PMHi geek girls,
This seemed like a nice thread to wake back up (some good advice here) so I thought I would post here....
I need some fashion help with my workplace attire! I have to dress business casual (even though we don't even SEE anyone else but other employees during the workday, and I work in cube land, surround by other code monkeys most of which are boy in khakis).
Anyway, I am getting tired of slacks. I do love skirts, but I hate tights and high heels. I want to dress girlie for work, but bare legs and barefeet I'm told are unacceptable!
I am far more likley to wear birks than prada, but birks are not acceptable. As much as I love the look of boots, my calves are not skinny enough for any nice pair of boots I have found. Plus, I live in Florida so snow is not an issue, and I tend to run on the warm side so staying warm is not a big concern either. I could be very happy in a skirt with flip flips but again, not PC enough for work!
SO, does anyone have any great ideas for sensible but still cute and sassy and work friendly shoes? Without looking matronly, or like a waitress??
When I am not at work I tend to be quite informal - I also am a belly dancer and wear yoga pants and an exercise top to teach class in and wear slip on shoes (like birks), and the rest of the time I am in jeans with doc martins. -

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Thu, December 29, 2005 - 2:39 PMThere ARE boots out there that you may be able to wear. The kind that are laceless or zipperless are stretchy. These may work! There are also some plus-size clothing stores that carry boots with a wider calf.
I have a pair of very flat, mary-jane with ankle-strap shoes that I get a ton of compliments on. They look great with jeans, skirts or capris.
Mules can be a good option:

Chinese slippers are comfy and cute:

Oh, and I TOTALLY wore my indian shoes out, wearing them with just about everything I own (they take a few days to get used to wearing though):

(I've seen some that were a lot prettier than these but this is all I can find online)

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Thu, January 5, 2006 - 1:01 PMI've found for shoes, danskos are a good compromise... comfortable but nice enough to qualify as cubicleland attire.
I've also been experimenting with long skirts as an alternative to pants... royal robbins has a nice long black skirt made of stretchy material which seems to work well sitting at my desk or even crawling under it to rewire the computers under my desk. ... and goes nicely with my new danskos.
So far it's been working for me... -
-
Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Fri, January 6, 2006 - 2:28 PMOh, the danksos look a lot like my Earth Shoes that I love so much!
www.comfortableshoes.com/item_...ew.cfm
And I totally agree on the long skirts, covers your bum when you have to crawl under desks, and also hides the bare legs underneath :)
I did just get a new pair of Doc Martin boots that have a velcro tab at the calf so that they are adjustable at the calf! Cute enough for skirts....but I might have to break down and wear tights to pull off wearing the knee length skirts with the boots :(

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Tue, January 3, 2006 - 6:22 PMI have to second the smiling though I tend to do that anyway.
WAX! Your face!!! Get those brows done ladies and don't be growing the stash like the men!
I think the ticket is a great style to your hair that isn't hard to keep up but lets you tie it back when you need to start rack mounting things. Make friends with your stylist! She will keep you looking good.
The only thing I think I need to recomend is look in the mirror before you head out the door. I went traveling, came back to the SF Bay area and you could tell who the geeks were and I am not talking about their badges flapping in the wind. The wrinkled stained look is out!

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Wed, January 4, 2006 - 10:40 PMThis is all way too nellie for me. Why not take a more sensible approach?
- Black underwear that doubles as a swimsuit ("No, really, nobody can tell the difference at this distance").
- Shoes that can be used as a weapon. Handy tip: this is more about the perfect balance between weight and general weild-ability than pointy-ness.
- Pants that, when you tie knots in the ankles and waist, can be blown up with air in the unlikely but hazardous event of a water landing.
- A business / interview suit that's impermeable enough to be used as a tent dropcloth on a surprise getaway weekend.
- Tire chains, which can be used as functional and decorative restraints (ok, not clothing by the strictest definition, but I'm counting them as an accessory).
- Ponchos, as a cloaking device, picnic blanket, sleeping bag, pillow....
I'm sure there are others!

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Thu, January 5, 2006 - 2:29 PMOh Drusilla, I'm glad you are joking. Any piece of clothing that is multifuntional usually isn't a good fashion statement. The purse that functions as multi-carrying device that's bigger than your head, the cargo pants chock-full of pockets with giant buldge impressions of your stuff (and I'm not talking the good kind of "stuff"), the fanny pack that doubles as a fat enhancer and gives you that oh so covetted tourist look. The list goes on.
Here's one good tip though; clearance items aren't all bad! Of course there's a reason why there's 500 pairs of that lovely fluffy pirate shirt that's been reduced six times, but every now and then you'll find a gem. I bought a great pair of jeans from AE for $19.99. Normal price was $68.99, and it was the last pair. Sweet. -

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Thu, January 5, 2006 - 9:40 PM
Who was joking? And I lurve cargo pants.
But your email gave me an even better idea for a cute new accessory, using only duct tape and two pocket-sized Van de Graaf generators. -
-
Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Fri, January 6, 2006 - 5:14 AMMy email? I didn't know I had my email on here. I hope that's a joke. And if it's not, I hope it's atleast my spam addy.
And if this isn't a joke, "- Pants that, when you tie knots in the ankles and waist, can be blown up with air in the unlikely but hazardous event of a water landing. ", then I don't know what one is. Might be useful for a rafter or something I guess.

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 12:53 PMFWIW Drusilla, my academic advisor used to teach swimming at school and she taught the students how to inflate their jeans and use them as a flotation device. A student visited her family in the Philipines after that class ended and she survived a ferry accident by suing her jeans as a flotation device. So you go on with your fashion-geeky bad self.
Oh and the smile thing...the cool thing is that there are different nervous pathways in the brain for a real smile vs a forced smile, that's why so many people have this awkward grimace in photographs unless they are either truly happy/amused or they practice their photo-smile. My guess is that the grimace does not induce the endorphines. -

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 12:55 PMum and by 'suing' I mean using. <awkward grin> -
-
Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 1:01 PMi have to say, i find all the "fashion" talk disappointing.
a geekgirl's best asset? her brain.
second best is her confidence.... geek girls don't need capri pants or tiny purses or whatev to be wonderful, sexy goddesses.
i've been given the most compliments when i was in bdu's and a wifebeater. -
-
Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 1:15 PMI disagree...why can't we think the shallow thoughts along with the deeper ones?
To quote the inimitable Sphinx, "When you care for what is outside, what is inside cares for you." :-P
I'm sure we'll be getting back to Quantum Physics and the ins and outs of XML soon. ;-)
-
Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 1:18 PM<avoiding 'wifebeater' tangent>
Agreed. I think I was shying away from the Cosmo-style fashion accent.
I think BDU's and other similar fashion statements are still fashion of sorts.
I agree with the brain and confidence remark. But -=given=- that the most attractive thing about a geek girl's being is her brain and personailty, what would you say with regard to those ephemeral, external, trappings would make her more attractive.
I say it's her ability to kick a$$ in video-games, though it never lured anyone for me, it was a plus after I got them. -
-
Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 1:37 PMapologies if calling the tanktop undershirts the only thing i know them as was offensive.
i certainly don't mind the occassional fashion/beauty tip for instance, peel-off facial masks, functional, *and* fun!
however, when it gets into the realm of, as you aptly put it, cosmo-style fashion, though i love the pretty dresses and stuff, i think it is less geekgirl than i would like to see accentuated in the "geekgirl" arena ;)
as for the video gaming, i certainly concur with that....though i would add the caveat that willingness to play, or even watch, even when you do not kick ass is just as attractive. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 2:05 PMre; the wb, I think I was avoiding the tangent not bc I was so much offended as generally avoiding the subject as it has been one of those I could go on about. I prefer to not make a term like that part of my normal volcabulary, but it has been en vogue lately, so what can you do. No worries. I really wasn't offended er anything.
With regard to all the other stuff you said, I agree, though I am rarely girly, I have been told on the few occasions that I girl-up, I wear it well. -

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Thu, January 12, 2006 - 10:45 AM"a geekgirl's best asset? her brain....second best is her confidence.... geek girls don't need capri pants or tiny purses or whatev to be wonderful, sexy goddesses."
"I think I was shying away from the Cosmo-style fashion accent."
My point exactly, but y'all are much less abstruse. To wit:
There's a difference between taking care of my external appearance vs. letting the corporate style peddlers and misogynists dictate my appearance. Their goal is to separate people from their money by propagating insecurity around being in/out of fashion and body image. I'm not saying to dress like Rae Dawn Chong in Quest for Fire, just that it's best to be aware of their influence.
Beauty comes from a healthy mind and body, not cunningly-stitched body coverings and ever-vigilant body hair management.
But I was serious about the pants inflation thing. And the Van de Graaf generators. -
-
Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Thu, January 12, 2006 - 12:21 PMFor the record: I do not mind the Quest for Fire fashion statement, so long as the musk part is well under control. Call me a faashion nazi. -

Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Thu, January 12, 2006 - 12:53 PM"I say it's her ability to kick a$$ in video-games, though it never lured anyone for me"
Now that you mention it, it totally has lured them for me <lol>. Even before I ever thought of myself as a geek, I routinely had guys sidle up and express their awe as I turned over the Astroids machine at the local Straw Hat Pizza, back in the day. I ended up with two boyfriends (the ones who wiggled up to me the nicest <lol>) out of that. But I also wore skin tight pants back then (it was the 70s!), and probably wiggled a lot as I played, so I doubt that it was *purely* on my gaming skill. Didn't bother me any, since the guys were hot <snicker>. I say, if it's in your arsenal, use it....brains, dexterity, charisma...whatever is part of the you "package", if you ID as a geek, is all geeky, and all good : ). -
-
Re: Geekgirl fashion secrets
Sat, January 14, 2006 - 8:39 AMWeighing in as an old geek (46), I heartily endorse the sunscreen recommendation - I was skeptical when I was younger, but watching my Grandmother and mother age very well after avoiding the sun, I decided it couldn't hurt, so I started using a moisturizer with sunscreen, and I am holding up all right. As for dress, I am in a cubicle too, and generally wear pants - I find colored jeans or cotton pants that fit well, and generally buy a few in different colors, and usually wear Rockport walking shoes - if I want to wear a skirt, or look a little dressier, I wear Trotters flats. I know things are easier nowadays, but I found that I am taken more seriously if I don't get too glamorous - not that I am inclined that way anyway. Maybe it is that my appearance is not a distraction to any males I am interacting with. I know that is relieving them of their responsibility to be professional, but I also grew up with two brothers and spent 9 years in the Army, and it is just easier to remove some things from the equation starting out. If you decide to socialize with some of your co-workers, dress up when you go out if you like, and the rules are also a little different if you are shooting for marketing or executive positions, but in the trenches, I find this to be the best (and most comfortable) solution.
